Meat Shares

What is a meat share?
A meat share is a collection of local, organic meats. Each box will include a selection of beef, pork and chicken. The share right before Thanksgiving will also include a turkey.
How much is in a meat share?
We offer two sizes of meat shares.
Small Meat Share A small meat share is designed for a family that eats meat about twice per week or has limited freezer space. It includes about 65 pounds of meat (distributed over two dates). All the meat will be frozen with the possible exception of the 10-18 lb. Thanksgiving turkey that will be included in the November share. (The turkeys may or may not be frozen depending on the fall processing schedule available to us.)
Large Meat Share A large meat share is the best value if you eat meat more frequently or have extra storage capacity. It includes about 105 pounds of meat (distributed over two dates). All the meat will be frozen with the possible exception of the 10-18 lb. fresh Thanksgiving turkey that will be included in the November share. The turkeys may or may not be frozen depending on the fall processing schedule available to us.
Can I choose what kinds of meats are in a share?
Each box will include roughly the same cuts of beef, pork and chicken. When you pick up your share you're welcome to browse through the boxes and even "swap" with other shareholders here at the farm.
What does a meat share cost?
We buy directly from local farmers to keep the cost of local, organic meats affordable. Buying a meat share costs less than purchasing the same products at the grocery store. (Well, that is if you could even find all these cuts of meat in all their organic and local glory at your grocery or specialty store!)
A small meat share costs $450 and a large meat share costs $700. Visit our sample meat share page for more details about costs.
How does delivery/pick-up work?
Meat shares are available for on-farm pickup only. We do not currently offer delivery for our meat share. (We don't yet have the logistics of delivering frozen meats worked out!)
Meat shares are available for pick-up at the farm in Alfred, Maine, on two dates: One in November and again in March. You will receive about half of your frozen meat on each date. Your turkey will be available at the November pick-up (a few days before Thanksgiving.)
When you arrive at the farm on pick-up day, we will hand you a box packed full of frozen cuts of meat and you can decide if you'd like to trade any of those with other shareholders.
And while you're at the farm, don't forget to check out our farm store, where you can stock up on eggs, cheeses and baked goods from a local wood-fired brick oven. We may even coordinate advanced orders for Thanksgiving pies and other treats - stay tuned!
Can I split a meat share or get a half share?
If you think a meat share will be too much food for your family, you can find somebody to split a share with you. A caveat about splitting a meat share - we anticipate that it will be a bit challenging to split, since we're not yet sure exactly how each type of meat will be divided/packaged in each distribution. (For example, we can't promise that there would be a 2-pound package of ground beef for you and another 2-lb. package for the person you're splitting with.) And there will definitely be some things, like the fresh Thanksgiving turkey, that just aren't splittable. Since all the meat will be frozen (except possibly the turkey), you won't really be able to divide up specific packages on-site, but there will be a lot of variety, so you could probably achieve a fair division of the meats with some careful mixing and matching.
Bottom line? If you choose to split a meat share, you'll have to be very comfortable negotiating with your splitter, since it will be a bit of a balancing act to share the contents of each distribution evenly.
Do you raise the animals yourselves?
The farming here at Wolf Pine Farm is confined entirely to vegetables. All of the meats for meat shares are raised by our partner farms.
